Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia is a condition that is a result of visual preference towards one eye causing the eye that is under utilized to not fully develop its visual pathways. This can be from either a large refractive difference between right and left eyes, or from a muscle imbalance causing one eye to be misaligned and turn in or out most commonly. Typical treatments for refractive amblyopia include full time wear of vision correction with or without patching of the stronger eye depending on the severity of the condition. When the cause of amblyopia is muscle related then either prisms in the glasses, surgery or muscle vision therapy are usually recommended. Due to the multiple potential causes of amblyopia, symptoms are not always obvious. Amblyopia will not resolve on its own and the outcomes are tremendously improved when the condition is detected early. The outcome of amblyopia is much better when diagnosed at an early age which is one of the many reasons children should have regular eye exams. Amblyopia usually will begin to develop before age 6. Children or young adults diagnosed with this condition are recommended to have eye exams on a regular basis as the correction will change as the condition becomes stabilized.
