Cataract formations result in a clouding of the normally clear lens protein inside the eye. Clouding of the lens protein will cause blurring of vision, increased glare sensitivity, poor night vision and changes in the refractive correction. This clouded lens will now split light instead of focus it which is why vision is so affected. Most cataracts arise in the fifth decade of life but diabetes, eye trauma or chronic use of steroids may accelerate the process. Age related cataracts usually develop at a slow rate, while those from trauma or diabetes may progress faster. If you are experiencing a decrease in your ability to see at night, color perception changes, dimming of your vision or asymmetric changes in your vision you may have a cataract developing. Regular eye exams are recommended as this will help identify if and when you may need surgery for the correction of this condition. Cataracts arise without any pain, often the only perceived change the individual notices is their decrease in acuity and/or color perception changes. When surgery is indicated the clouded natural lens is replaced with a clear intraocular lens (IOL). We work with a network of very skilled cataract surgeons in the Brazos Valley as well as several in the Houston and Austin area should you prefer to have the procedure done there.
