Dry eye is one of the most common conditions present and least commonly addressed condition of the eye. Many symptoms are related to dryness of the cornea including variable vision, burning of the eyes, stinging upon opening eyes in morning, redness, pain upon blinking, foreign body sensation in the eye lid, double vision and even sharp pain. For the eye to see a clear proper image, adequate tears must be present to help in the refraction of light entering the eye. Dry eye may arise from many causes including too few tears produced at the lacrimal gland, too much drainage at the eye lid, certain medications taken, contact lens wear, venting/fans, allergies causing inflammation in the eye, LASIK, extended computer usage, lid anatomy, neurological conditions, incomplete lid closure while sleeping, environment and hormonal changes that may occur with age. Treating the root cause of the dryness is the best first step in managing this condition. Once the cause is identified we can provide many solutions that will improve your quality of vision, and in some cases quality of life. There are three main strategies in addressing dry eye including but not limited to increasing tear production, decreasing tear drainage, and/or decreasing inflammation. It is recommended that you have an evaluation if you feel you may be experiencing symptoms related to dry eye. This condition is something we take seriously and will provide all options available.
