Myopia (Nearsighted)

People who are myopic (nearsighted) will have a more difficult time seeing objects at distance. The distance objects are blurred due to either the axial length of the eye being too long or the power of the cornea/lens being too strong causing light rays to focus before the retina. This is by far the most common refractive condition in our country today and the primary reason children and young adults begin to wear vision correction. Evidence points to multiple causes of this refractive disorder including genetic predisposition and close working distances. This issue is easily corrected with either glasses or contact lenses and in some cases refractive surgery for those whom are candidates. Once diagnosed as myopic (nearsighted) it is recommended that regular eye exams are preformed to monitor its progression as this condition can change.
