Strabismus (Eye Turns)

Strabismus is a condition that typically arises when the eyes do not function properly together. This is usually from an imbalance of the musclulature controlling the eyes causing an eye to turn in, out, up, or down. The misalignment of the eyes is typically evident before two years and is best addressed at a younger age. If left uncorrected/addressed eye turn can lead to amblyopia and may impact the scholastic preformance of the child or young adult affected. Common signs include alternating turning of the eye in or out, losing place easily while reading, reversals of letters and numbers, headaches, and car/sea sickness. Treatment for strabismus is most often achieved with either prisms, vision therapy, full time wear of vision correction and in more severe cases surgery. If surgery is preformed minor alignment issues may remain which still can be corrected with prisms most commonly. Children or adults diagnosed with strabismus should have their eyes examined on a regular basis as this deviation can change/decompensate as the individual ages.
